06/26: After Dark
Category: Rotter and Friends | Posted by: Team | Add comment
oh FRIENDS.
Cue the gratitude vibes as I want to thank everyone who came out to and supported last night's R + F/Anthology Recordings/Viva Radio After Dark event with Bobb Trimble. It seemed we all needed a night like this, for even as the Rose Live Bar in Williamsburg was sweatily packed to the gills pretty much from 9 pm- 1 am, the vibes were far from stressful and it was genuinely refreshing to see people enjoying music they haven't necessarily heard before from the past, especially when the magical Mr. Trimble took the stage. What a moment it was for us all to have the psych folk legend sound sharper than ever for his first ever NY appearance as he breezed through classic jams from his two albums released in the early eighties. Special hugs to Kris Thompson, Arizona, Mexican Summer (who blew minds with the KILLER 7 inch record), Secretly Canadian, Turquoise Wisdom, Brian from Awesome Tapes from Africa, Anthology, and Viva Radio.
We even had the honor of Vanity Fair (woah) picking the night as one of the top 3 parties 'round the globe for this week-check it.
Here's a lil taste of the night courtesy of Rotter and Friend's chief photographer and live show lover, Hal Horowitz (more after the jumper):

06/15: Beefheart's Starry Cameos

FRIENDS.
There is nothing that makes us beam more than seeing people wearing their R + F wares in the world. One shirt thats been making the rounds this month is the orchid Beefheart tee from this season. We have been getting some really killer emails from people praising the designs, lord Beefheart himself, and best of all, people who are just discovering the EPIC "Safe As Milk" album, which is a masterpiece. Our super talented bud Farmer Dave Scher, whose solo opus Flash Forward To The Good Times comes out this August (buckle up its a psych pop whammy) recently graced the stage with his tee opening up for and playing the pedal with the lovely Jenny Lewis. The cover for his 7-inch which comes out in July on Mexican Summer is a personal fave. The sloth puppet!

Also check out our fantastic fan and friend Natalie Portman wearing her Beefheart tee interviewing legendary Irish director Jim Sheridan for the new film discovery forum/site, Makingof.
AND this just in-the amazing Johnny Bell of Crystal Antlers..

We would love to see YOU in your Rotter gear as well! send pics please to: info@rotterandfriends.com
Onwards and upwards...

This weekend marks the end of one of Rotter and Friend's nearest and dearest stores, i Heart, who had a stellar 5-year run. The shop on 262 Mott street in Nolita was headed by our bud Jill Bradshaw, who was the first to bring in the GRAND "out of the box" overseas hero streetwear brands like PAM, Tonite, Zakee Shariff, Silas, and Birdie. The i Heart crew has supported my work since day 1. In 2007, we collaborated on the best party ever during CMJ and the first set of Moontunes was shown as an exhibition in-store. We really appreciate and raise our coffee cup to all the sweet memories and guts this store have given NYC. Thanks to Jill + Toni for recognizing some ballsy brands, great art, and throwing some memorable events (like Morgan falling down the stairs at my opening). Celebrate the mayhem with my favorite live band out there right now CHILDREN this Saturday at Shangra-La in Brooklyn. That band gives me owl-eyes, a must see!

I also wanted to share some pieces from the first line I worked as the "artist in residence" on called Birdie (which i Heart always stocked) as I am harping the memory vibes today. Birdie was started in 2001 by my GREAT friend Nick Wakeman in London. After selling handmade stickers in Nick's Supra Girls shop in Notting Hill, we got in touch and started collaborating for the next 6 years on each collection.

The line holds a huge place in my heart, Nick's blend of smart fits and crazy cuts are still unmatched. I miss it dearly. I would travel to London twice a year and have tea, listen to oldies c/o Steve Wright in The Afternoon on BBC radio 2, and just draw up some really fun ideas. We were even sent to Tokyo in 2003 for a Birdie/Rotter exhibition that had my paintings placed next to our collections-really magical time. Here is some of the fun we had, for more check out the Birdie section on my portfolio site here.

FRIENDS.
Wanted to share some prism prose from my DEAR friends over in London town Zakee Shariff and Al Fingers, who have just completed a RAD book entitled "Fashion A-Z, An Illustrated Dictionary." Soul sister Zakee illustrated the action, soul brother Al wrote and designed it, and you can now own the little gem by hopping to Amazon here.

I have been a major fan of Zakee's art for years. She is a genuine and original force that bridges amazing prints, textiles, drawings, fashion, and painting to make for lasting work that makes you smile. Check out these pieces:

Reggae wizard Al makes some super killer mixes as well. Time for some clickin' fun.

FRIENDS.
Sorry it's been a while since the last dose of wisdom. R + F have left Manhattan and moved to Brooklyn and we are pre-tty stoked. No more clothes in our stove! No more murphy beds hitting our heads!
Anyway wanted to share this fun interview I did with new awesome site to bookmark, StyleCaster. Special thanks to Cindy Augustine and Elizabeth Monson-you guys rule!

It's also almost the end of the week, which harps a special link I like to visit often (sigh, it's not keyboard cat folks)-thanks Zach for this moogy horizon:

Happy Monday FRIENDS.
Nothing like starting the day off with spilling an entire soy latte on your lap. Oh god on a wheel!
To fix the "I don't do Monday" Garfield vibes, we here at R + F like to throw on the amazing dizzying licks of 70's Dutch band EPITAPH. My friend Keith turned me onto "Outside The Law" album last year and I'm still blown away! Check out this magical performance below:

FRIENDS.
Had to share this video of our buds from LA, The Crystal Antlers, doing an owl-eyed performance of "A Thousand Eyes" live on KEXP in Seattle. Looks like the boys seem to have great eyes for fashion as R + F's "Ram On" tee makes a nice lil' cameo in this video...
PS. The Antler's new album Tentacles is a whopper. Check it out here.
